GM Nate Kiel

GM Nate Kiel played his youth hockey for the KPHA Ice Hawks and in 1977 joined the first-ever high school team on the peninsula at Kenai Central High School, serving as captain of the Kardinals and graduating in 1980. The following season he became the school’s youngest-ever assistant coach.

After earning an Associate of Arts degree at Northland Junior College (MN), Kiel attended Bemidji State University (MN) to pursue a degree in teaching and coaching certification with hockey endorsements. Aside from professional certifications and endorsements, Kiel also has USA Hockey Level IV coaching certification.

From 1983-1985 he served under R.H. Bob Peters, his mentor and the second-winningest coach in collegiate hockey history. Under Peters, he served in management of a BSU hockey team that would win numerous accolades, including an NCAA Division II national title, perfect 31-0 season, and induction to the College Hockey Hall of Fame. He completed his coaching practicum at Region VIII powerhouse Bemidji High School and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1986 before returning to Alaska, and has coached area youth of all levels for over twenty years. Kiel has been on the KCHS hockey staff for much of the program’s history and in 2007 coached one of the most prolific Kardinal teams ever to a Region III championship and fourth place finish at the 4A Alaska State Championships. Before assuming the position as GM of the Brown Bears in the spring of 2008, he scouted Alaskan prospects for various junior teams and had several former players go on to all levels of junior hockey and play at the NCAA Division I level.

Kiel’s goal in working with the KRBB is to help ensure that our community has a sustainable Junior A program that will provide academic and athletic opportunities to aspiring youth. He lives in Kenai with his wife Gina. They have five children. His commitment to the sport and its players would not be possible without their patience and support.

Selects program.  While with the Selects, Oliver coached at the 14, 16, and 18 AAA levels, earning two state championships and was a USA Hockey National Championship Quarter-finalist in 2008 as an assistant coach at the Midget Major level (Buffalo, NY).
