Atoms and Mini-Mites Start November 4th At The Soldotna Sports Center BEARS TRADE FOR KINNEBREWWith their first home series against rival Alaska Avalanche rapidly approaching, the Kenai River Brown Bears did the unexpected this week, trading one of their top blueliners to the very team they will face off against Friday night. Defenseman Micki Mihailovich was dealt to the Wasilla franchise as part of a deal that brings twenty year-old Braden Kinnebrew to the peninsula. "We were presented with an offer for Mihailovich that we thought would help our club both immediately and into the next season", interim Head Coach Oliver David commented. "We wish Mihailovich success as a defenseman; he was an offensive leader for us. He will excel with the Avalanche that's for sure." The Bears will gain a solid two-way defenseman who is well known in Alaska circles. Braden Kinnebrew excelled at South Anchorage High, where he helped the Wolverines to three state 4A titles. He played his rookie junior season in the British Columbia Hockey League, before returning home last season to play with several of his former teammates on the Alaska Avs squad. The Bears will benefit in all zones from the veteran play of Kinnebrew. "In Kinnebrew we feel excited to be receiving a stay at home, defensively sound defenseman with offensive capabilities as well", David commented. "He will add great depth to our blue line and leadership in our locker room. We have been making progress as a team and Kinnebrew is a good overall fit for us." The Brown Bear organization wishes Micki all the best in his future endeavors. "In the short time that Micki was with us, he demonstrated tremendous competitiveness, quickly gaining the respect of his teammates and from others around the league," stated GM Nate Kiel. "He no doubt has a bright future."

With the termination of the previous head coach earlier this week, the Brown Bears regain enthusiasim in elevating Oliver David to the position of interim Head Coach. Coach Oliver David is in his first season as a coach of the Brown Bears. Oliver joined the Brown Bears staff for the 2009-10 season after spending the past three seasons coaching with the L.A. Selects program. While with the Selects, Oliver coached at the 14, 16, and 18 AAA levels, earning two state championships and was a USA Hockey National Championship Quarter-finalist in 2008 as an assistant coach at the Midget Major level (Buffalo, NY). Prior to joining the Selects, Oliver spent two seasons with the California Wave organization. In 2006, Oliver helped guide the Wave to a California State Championship, Pacific District Championship, and USA Hockey National Championship as assistant coach at the 16 AAA level (Rochester, NY). Following the 2006 campaign, Oliver coached the Anaheim Jr. Ducks at the Midget Major level, again winning the California State title, and Pacific District title. He also made a USA Hockey National quarterfinals appearance while with the Jr. Ducks in 2007 (Frasier, MI). Oliver has worked extensively with USA Hockey as an evaluator for the Pacific District, and as a coach at the National Select Festivals each summer. Most Recently, Oliver was named assistant coach of the USA Hockey Inline Men's national team, earning a silver medal in 2009 at the IIHF Inline World Championships, and will return as assistant coach for the IIHF Inline World Championships in 2010 being held in Sweden. Oliver is excited about the new opportunities and returning to the Peninsula as coach of the Brown Bears, where he started his junior career playing with the Peninsula Chinooks in 1998-1999. Along with his coaching duties he is committed to working with the local youth organization in establishing a developmental program for years to come. GM Nate Kiel stated: "Coach David appears to have the qualities and knowledge in line with the overall vision of the Kenai River Brown Bears, a program of the Kenai Peninsula Youth Foundation." The Brown Bears will be excited to get home and play in front of their home town fans. Games will start Friday October 9th at 7:30 pm and Saturday at the same time. Come on out and support the Kenai River Brown Bears Season Starts FridayCoach Quarters is excited about the start of the season. It would have been nice to open in our barn in front of our fans instead of going on a three week road trip. Which will begin Friday in Wasilla against the Alaska Avalanche and we know they will be ready for us. We are going to meet them several times this season and every match should be a good one. These will be great warm ups for the NAHL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota next week. With only seven returning players that include goalie Jimmy Hamby and defense Jake Musselman and Keagan Kiel along with forwards Joe Spencer, Brad Fusaro, Ryan Townsend and the Captain of this year's team Jed McGlasson we have had to do a lot of recruiting. A strong main camp along with our training camp we have had to make some tough decisions to put together a very competitive team. Our team will have a little different presence on the ice this season. We still have good speed and skill but our size is a better mix which will help the physical part of our game. We also have a fresh new look behind the bench in Head Coach Marty Quarters and his Assistant Coach Oliver David who played for the Peninsula Chinooks in the 1998/1999 season. You can watch all of our games live on the B2 network. The Showcase games can be watched live go to the NAHL Showcase logo. For all of our other games click the NAHL logo on the bottom.
